PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small paper feeder capable of consistently feeding paper sheets without damaging the paper sheets by separating the highest paper sheet of a paper sheet bundle and conveying it to a feed destination after moving it once in the reverse direction. SOLUTION: The paper feeder comprises a paper feed tray 1 with a paper sheet bundle 30 placed therein, a hook member 5 which is provided on a tip of the paper feed direction of the paper feed tray 1 to lock a tip of the paper sheet to be fed next, a separation unit 6 which is provided above a rear end of the paper feed direction of the paper feed tray 1, sucks the highest paper sheet of the paper sheet bundle 30, moves it once in the direction reverse to the paper feed direction, and feeds it in the paper feed direction, and a conveying roller 17 which receives the paper sheet fed from the separation unit 6 and conveys it to the conveying destination. A suction means and a discharge means are integrated with the separation unit 6. Air sucked when sucking the highest paper sheet of the paper sheet bundle 30 is used for the air for separating the highest paper sheet of the paper sheet bundle 30 from the next paper sheet and the air for shuffling the second and subsequent paper sheets from the highest paper sheet.
