PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative. SOLUTION: The optically active hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative represented by formula (II) (R, X and n are each R, X and n in the specification) is produced by treating a keto-carboxylic acid derivative represented by formula (I) with a culture of a microorganism capable of stereoselectively reducing a compound, a cell body or its treated material and recovering the formed optically active hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative.
