A dendron 2 comprising a focal point 4 and a plurality of fluorinated end groups 9. The dendron may have a thiol, silane, carboxylic acid, phosphonate or other suitable moiety at the focal point suitable for chemisorption to a substrate (3). Typical substrates 3 include a metal, glass and silicon type substrates. A thiol is the preferred moiety at the focal point. Preferred fluorinated dendron thiols are formed with a decane chain extending from the focal point to one or more di- or trihydroxybenzyl units forming branching points. The hydroxyl groups of the outermost benzyl units forming phenol ethers with perfluoroalkyl terminating groups (e.g CF3(CF2)5(CH2)4 and CF3(CF2)9(CH2)4) on the outer hydroxyl groups. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) comprising a plurality of dendrons bonded to a suitable substrate, the formation of a monolayer, and devices such as ink jet print heads featuring these SAMs are also outlined. |
