An escape arrangement for high rise buildings, comprising a vertical tubular structure with a cross section of any shape, forming successive chambers S, one above another, by internal, vertically spaced partitions L, at least some of the chambers S being provided with access openings H and each internal partition including a portion F which slopes downwardly to form a slide, having an orifice O at, or adjacent to, its lower end, the orifice O of each chamber being offset from that of the chamber below to prevent a clear optical view of the descent path. The walls W of the tubular structure may be heat and fire resistant and the partitions may be constructed to absorb the impact force of the descent and facilitate sliding with reduced friction. A revolving landing stage (10, fig. 2) may be provided to provide a cushioned landing, preferably in the form of a hollow inflated unit with an upwardly projecting centre portion (12, fig. 2). |
