The invention relates to a method for reconfiguring control panels 12 associated with security devices, e.g. alarms, and enabling automated software configuration data updates as software versions of a control panel 12 change. The method allows conversion of stored configuration-data formats when making new panel software updates. The method includes storing a data structure indicating a manner in which configuration data is to be stored. An updated software program may identify the data structure and apply a conversion function that translates stored configuration data into a format compatible for use by the revised software. The data structure includes data self-describing the stored configuration data so that a conversion function can easily access the self-describing information and render the stored configuration data plafform independent. An 'adaptive data description language, extendible' (ADDLE) is used. The configuration data may be temporary stored remote from the device, for example on SPl key 20 which is a memory device that uses the SPl protocol. |
