FIELD: application of wear-resistant coats on cutting tools; metalworking. ^ SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes vacuum plasma application of multi-layer coats layer by layer: first layer made from titanium compound and metal is applied, then intermediate layer made from titanium nitride or carbonitride and metal is applied and then upper layer made from material of intermediate layer alloyed by silicon is applied; used as metal is aluminum, iron, chromium, molybdenum or zirconium; application of layer is performed by means of three cathodes located horizontally in one plane: two sectional opposite cathodes are made from titanium and metal and third sectional cathode is made from titanium and silicon. ^ EFFECT: enhanced serviceability of cutting tools; enhanced adhesion strength with base. ^ 1 tbl
