A lip-type seal for sealing the outer periphery of a rotating shaft (S) supported by a predetermined housing (H). The lip-type seal has a seal ring (20) and a support ring (30). The seal ring (20) is formed from an elastic material so as to have an annular fit portion (21) fitted in the housing and a lip portion (23) extending radially inward in a substantially annular conical shape from the fit portion. The support ring (30) has an annular support portion (33) defining an annular joint (31) joined to the fit portion and a hole (30a) through which the rotating shaft is passed and extending from the joint portion side into a region in the middle of the lip portion so as to support the lip portion from the inside. The lip portion (23) has a tapered cross-sectional shape. In this shape, the lip portion (23) is gradually thinned from a region where the portion becomes in non-contact with the support portion (33) toward the fore-end of the portion. With the structure above, desired sealing capability is achieved, wear under high-pressure is reduced, and durability is increased.
