The inventive method takes into account the residual gas exiting the cylinder in order to reliably determine the induced air mass. To this end, the dependency of the induced air mass on the induction pressure is subdivided into three regions of which the middle region is modeled as a non-linear dependency of the induced air mass on the induction pressure.
