The starter has an electromagnetic switch (3) with a movable core (5) to simultaneously activate contacts (7, 12, 13) of a supply circuit. A control lever (4) of a starter drive assembly (1) is provided between rest and work positions. A cutting gap (J3) in mechanical connection between the core and the assembly is varied during tilting movement of the lever. The gap is small in the rest position and large in the work position.
