PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detector and a photographing apparatus capable of performing focus detection in a wide range within a photographing screen and performing simultaneous detection of longitudinal detection and lateral detection by using a phase difference detection method. SOLUTION: In the focus detector using a secondary image formation optical system, an optical member 107 having an anamorphic optical power is disposed between a primary image formation surface and a secondary image formation lens of a photographing optical system. The optical member has an optical power that broadens an image interval of a pair of optical images formed by the secondary image formation lens.
