PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Cu-based material free from contamination due to Fe and C, and to provide a method for manufacturing the Cu-based material while preventing it from being contaminated by Fe and C, though using an airtight vessel made of steel. SOLUTION: The Cu-based material includes Cu as an indispensable component and at least one component selected from W and a ceramic material. The manufacturing method comprises: a preliminary treatment step of mixing the powders containing the above components at a predetermined ratio, accommodating the mixed powder in the vessel made of a nonferrous material for baking, or press-forming the mixed powder into a green compact and holding the green compact with a holder made of a nonferrous material, and baking it at 1,083°C or higher but lower than 1,400°C; and a step of hot-isostatic-pressing the article baked in the preliminary treatment step, at 950°C or higher but lower than 1,083°C.
