A steam generator, e.g. for wallpaper removal, has a closed reservoir (11) with an electric heating element (24) in an angled setting to reach into the bottom of the water. The heating system is mounted into a recess (15) in the side of the reservoir with the element brazed onto a mounting plate (23) located against the inner wall of the reservoir. A thermal cut out switch (31) is fitted to the mounting at the same height as the heating element mounting.
