PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the deterioration of a photoreceptor caused by a corona discharge for charging the photoreceptor. SOLUTION: The charging device includes a charging section 18 for charging the photoreceptor 14, located opposite the charging device 18, by corona discharge. The area around the charging section 18 in which corona discharge is carried out is filled with a gas supplied from a gas supply section 19 such that a discharge start voltage is lower than that in atmosphere. A voltage applied to the charging section 18 from a voltage application section 20 for corona-discharging the photoreceptor 14 to be charged is set lower than the case where corona discharge is carried out in atmosphere. Thus the impact on the photoreceptor 14 caused by corona discharge for charging the photoreceptor 14 can be reduced to suppress the deterioration of the photoreceptor 14. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
