<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a license plate recognition device that makes a determination based on both color information and shape information, thereby making it possible to efficiently extract a license plate for processing while reducing processing burdens so as to eliminate the need to prepare template data. <P>SOLUTION: The license plate recognition device includes a camera 2 for picking up images in front of an own vehicle; a contrast difference image creating part 3 for converting the images picked up into a contrast-difference image that shows color contrast differences; a serial number area extracting part 4 for extracting the serial-number area of the license plate according to a contrast difference between the background portion of the license plate and a serial number in the contrast-difference image; and a plate area extracting part 5 and a license plate determining part 6 for determining a license plate area on the basis of the number of places in the serial number extracted. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
