PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for estimating the amount of a gas yield in a coke oven at sufficiently high precision even in the case of a high mixing rate of a non- or slightly-coking coal, and also to provide a preparation process of a coke where the difference of a target value and an actual value of a gas yield can be made small. SOLUTION: The method for estimating a coke oven gas yield is characterized by estimating a coke oven gas yield Y (Nm<SP>3</SP>/t coal) converted into 4,800 kcal/Nm<SP>3</SP>, as a function of VM and VM×O on the base of a volatile matter of coal VM (mass %, dry) and the amount of oxygen O in the coal (mass%, dry).
