The invention relates to a clamping device for a stack of a plurality of electrochemical cells, and a method for assembling the same. The aim of the invention is to provide a clamping device with a simple structure, by which means a surface pressure can be exerted on the stack in a stable and homogeneous manner in order to ensure a good electrical connection. The invention also relates to a method for mounting said device on the stack in a simple and secure manner. Said clamping device consists of pressure plates arranged on the upper and lower sides and optionally between the cells, at least one clamping element, and elements for connecting the clamping element(s) to the pressure plates in a force-transmitting manner and for producing a tractional force acting on the plates in the direction of the stack. Each pressure plate is crossed by at least one brace crossing a channel extending perpendicularly to the direction of the stack. Said brace forms the element for connecting the pressure plate to a clamping element in a force-transmitting manner, and a carrier for reinforcing the pressure plate. The assembly is carried out using an external compression device.
