PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water-absorbing resin by a reversed phase suspension polymerization method, by which the water-absorbing resin having a small particle diameter and a narrow particle size distribution is obtained. SOLUTION: This method for producing the water-absorbing resin, comprising subjecting a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer to a reversed phase suspension polymerization using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator in the presence of a cross-linking agent and a surfactant in a hydrocarbon-based solvent, is characterized by using a sucrose fatty acid ester prepared by ester-binding a≥18C fatty acid (the content of the fatty acid is≥75 wt.%, when the fatty acid is a 18C fatty acid) to sucrose, as the surfactant.
