The device has a chamber in which a retainer for a rubber material and a surface is arranged. A drive mechanism produces a relative motion between the material and the surface. A cooling and heating device produces a controlled atmosphere in the chamber, and a control device (9) adjusting the atmosphere to temper the material, during the relative motion. The heating device introduces an air conditioning medium directly to the chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining an abrasion or friction of a rubber material.
