<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce efficiently the idle lift which has been generated frequently in a dynamic valve system of a clearance adjusting element of hydraulic type. <P>SOLUTION: A cam for operating a valve system of an internal combustion engine is equipped with a cam base circle 33, a cam main region 32, and a pre-cam region 31. The pre-cam region 31 is formed just in front of a rising section 32a of the cam main region 32 between the cam base circle 33 and the cam main region 32.
