PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head which even eliminates the need of a complicate manufacturing process, can obtain high thermal insulation efficiency and high heat radiation efficiency, and can carry out good printing and high-speed printing at a low energy. SOLUTION: In the thermal head, discrete electrodes and common electrodes are formed on a substrate. Tip parts of the discrete electrodes and tips of the common electrodes are arranged to be engaged with each other in the shape of comb teeth, on which heating resistors are formed in the shape of an array. At the time of forming the discrete electrodes by patterning and common electrodes, the electrodes are temporarily left as a sacrifice layer at a part under each heating resistor layer, and the sacrifice layer is removed by etching after the heating resistor layer is formed, whereby a space layer is formed under the heating resistors.
