Metal colloid particles capable of forming a metal colloid by dispersing, at a prescribed ratio, the particles in an aqueous or nonaqueous dispersion medium or a dispersion medium obtained by mixing both, which are constituted of metal particles and a protecting agent modifying the surfaces of the particles by coordination and in which the protecting agent has a carbon skeleton containing either sulfur or oxygen or both in the molecule and coordinates to the surfaces of the metal particles through an anchor consisting of the sulfur or oxygen atom or an atomic group containing both and the protecting agent further contains in the molecular structure one or more kinds of functional groups selected from the group consisting of alkoxysilyl, silanol group, and hydroxyalkyl.
