<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas diffusion electrode where draining property of the generated water from an electrode catalyst layer to a gas diffusion layer, moisture retention of the electrode catalyst layer, and gas diffusion property are improved; and to provide a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell where stable power generation characteristics are achieved even under operating conditions of an extensive humidity and current density range. <P>SOLUTION: The gas diffusion electrode 4 on a cathode side applied to the solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell comprises the electrode catalyst layer 13; fine porous layers 11, 12 which are arranged on the electrode catalyst layer 13, which include more than two layers of at least a second fine porous layer 12 and a first fine porous layer 11 made of different water-repellent materials, and in which the second fine porous layer 12 arranged on the electrode catalyst layer 13 side is more water-repellent than the first fine porous layer 11; and an oxidizer gas diffusion base material 10 which is arranged on the fine porous layers 11, 12 and made of carbon fiber. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
