PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optically active or racemic 3-cyanoglutaric acid monoesters. SOLUTION: The optically active or recemic 3-cyanoglutaric acid monoesters represented by formula (1) [R<SP>1</SP>is H, an alkyl, an alkenyl, phenyl, naphthyl, pyridyl, thiophen-2-yl or thiophen-3-yl; the hydrogen atom(s) of phenyl and naphthyl may be replaced by substituent(s) selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, trialkylsilyloxy groups, OH, alkoxy groups, H and trifluoromethyl groups; the hydrogen atoms of the pyridyl group may be replaced by substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, alkoxy groups and H; R<SP>2</SP>is a 1 to 4C alkyl].
