The invention relates to a device (1) for cooling a patient (2), particularly a patient suffering from cardiac arrest, comprising a device (3) for producing or providing a cooling medium and a device (4) through which the cooling medium flows and which is used to discharge cold transported by the cooling medium to the patient (2). The discharge device (4) sealingly envelops the patient (2) and is provided with distancing elements used to distance the patient (2) and with cavities (10) which are located between the distancing elements (9) and which are used to guide the cooling medium. In order to create a cooling device (1) which enables the patient (2) to be cooled in a particularly rapid manner, the cooling medium is formed by liquid air and the discharge device (4) is configured for essentially airtight envelopment of the patient (2) and at least one line (7) is provided for guiding the liquid air, said line comprising at least one opening (8) which leads into the discharge device (4) and which is used to vaporize the liquid air for correspondingly rapid cooling of the patient (2).
