PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To preclude rattling to be generated between a lock ring accommodating groove and a lock ring when the lock ring accommodated in the groove with the diameter enlarged is maintained in the diameter enlarged condition. SOLUTION: A tool for joining pipes works through such procedures that the lock ring 5 having a circumferentially split portion 5a is accommodated in the lock ring accommodating groove in the diameter enlarged condition, and in a socket in this condition, a spigot 8 having a projection 9 at the tip periphery is inserted so that the spigot projection 9 is positioned in the socket 2 nearer its innermost than the lock ring 5, and when the pipes are to be joined together, the tool is inserted to the split portion 5a of the lock ring 5 so as to maintain the lock ring 5 in the diameter enlarged condition, and is equipped with a first contact shoe 21 inserted into the split portion 5a and contacting with one end face 5b of the lock ring 5, a second contact shoe 22 to contact with the other end face 5c, and a gap adjusting means 23 to connect the first 21 and second shoes 22 with each other and capable of adjusting the distance L between them 21 and 22.
