PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent interference between two stacker cranes at the time of both automatic operation and manual operation, when carrying out work for the same article storage space by using the two stacker cranes. SOLUTION: Optical communicating means 13a, 13b are provided on an upper horizonal frame in a traveling frame element of the two stacker cranes 2a, 2b disposed across an article storage shelf. The stacker cranes 2a, 2b are provided with control devices 12a, 12b capable of receiving signals communicated between the optical communicating means 13a, 13b. When forks of the two stacker cranes 2a, 2b carry out work moving the forks backward/forward to an article storage space with the same storage location and the same stage, in case that the preceding fork of the stacker cranes 2a, 2b is determined as "under fork working", the other stacker fork of the stacker cranes 2b, 2a is enabled to stand by.
