PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope detecting the internal temperature of an imaging unit at the tip of the endoscope and cooling the imaging unit. SOLUTION: The endoscope is provided with an insertion tube 16 comprising a hard distal end 20, a bending section 21 provided in a bendable manner at the rear end of the distal end 20, and a soft tube section 22 provided at the rear end of the bending section 21; an imaging unit 45 built in the distal end 20 and having a CCD 44 arranged in the imaging position of an objective optical system 43; a cooling means for cooling the imaging unit 45; and a thermistor 59 provided inside the imaging unit 45 to detect the internal temperature of the imaging unit 45. Cooling operation by the cooling means is performed when the internal temperature of the imaging unit 45 detected by the thermistor 59 is a predetermined temperature or higher.
