PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the surface of a magnetostrictive material composed of an alloy consisting essentially of rare earth elements and iron and obtained by a powder metallurgical method less liable to be oxidized over a long period. SOLUTION: A silicon dioxide (SiO<SB>2</SB>) film is deposited on the surface of a magnetostrictive material having a composition satisfying Tb<SB>0.3</SB>Dy<SB>0.7</SB>Fe<SB>2</SB>by a plasma CVD process.
