<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a burst signal receiver capable of accurately discriminating a signal block and a non-signal block and outputting a signal with excellent S/N in an optical communication system wherein a master station and a plurality of slave stations are connected by optical fibers via a passive optical branching unit. <P>SOLUTION: The burst signal receiver changes a reference value e to a high level on the basis of a point of time t1 when an output c of a discrimination circuit reaches a signal presence state from a signal absence state and changes the reference value e to a low level on the basis of a point of time when the output c of the discrimination circuit reaches the signal absence state from the signal presence state. When an intensity b of the burst signal rises, since the receiver is operated on the basis of the reference value at the "lower level", the receiver can quickly detect the rising of the burst signal b. When the intensity b of the burst signal falls, since the receiver is operated on the basis of the reference value e at the "higher level", the receiver can quickly detect the trailing of the burst signal b.
