<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To complete payment without making a user perform complicated work even when no amount for currency information reaches a counter value in paying the counter value for a provided article or service by using electronic currency information. <P>SOLUTION: A payment unit 10 positioned additionally in a printer 32 is configured so as to make a payment by a user for a charge for use of the printer (the counter value for copy service or print service provided by the printer 32 in accordance with instructions from the user) by means of an IC (Integrated Circuit) chip 46 possessed by the user and housed in a card type carrier or a portable terminal and to make the payment by inputting cash by the user. The user selects a payment method by means of the IC chip 46 as the payment method for the charge for use.
