<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a reduction in the costs of a drive circuit and a compressor in the compressor capable of varying rotational speed by inverter control. <P>SOLUTION: This compressor comprises a reluctance motor (SR motor) 6 having a rotor without a permanent magnet and a stator formed of a copper winding and a steel sheet, a compression element 7 driven by the reluctance motor 6, and a sealed container 1 in which a refrigerant is sealed and which stores the reluctance motor 6 and the compression element 7. The compressor can arbitrarily vary the driving rotational speed. Since the rotor of the motor 6 of the compressor is formed in a simple structure formed of only an iron without a permanent magnet, the material cost and the manufacturing cost of the motor 6 itself can be reduced.
