PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for manufacturing electron emitting elements with good electron emitting properties.

SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing an electron emitting element including an electron emitter with a metal on the surface comprises steps of preparing a substrate with the electron emitter, and exposing the electron emitter to a gas containing oxygen and a gas containing the metal alternately.
