<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance resolution when reading a one-dimensional code in a device capable of reading both one-dimensional code and two-dimensional code. <P>SOLUTION: A body case with a rectangular reading opening is provided therein with a reading mechanism that includes an area sensor, lenses and an illuminator. In this case, the area sensor, which has a near square imaging visual field F, is mounted on a slant inclined at an angle of 45°to lengthwise and widthwise directions of the reading opening in the embodiment. A decoding process for a bar code B is executed with the steps of detecting (decoding) a start character B1 and a stop character B2, setting reading lines L traversing the entire bar code B from these positions, and analyzing a light-dark level of each pixel P aligned along the reading lines L.
