PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cheap and efficient modifying method of low basicity slag which is discharged in the smelting process of steelmaking and contains much foam for obtaining dense slag by defoaming. SOLUTION: In this modifying method of low basicity steelmaking slag, steelmaking slag having a basicity of not smaller than 0.8 is kept for at least 30 minutes at a temperature range satisfying formula (1): 400×(%CaO)/(%SiO<SB>2</SB>)+670≤T≤1,350, to obtain dense slag, and a vessel in which the slag is kept has a thermally insulated structure, and the modification is carried out with the sensible heat of the molten slag as the main heat source, wherein T represents a temperature in Celsius.
