PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Mach-Zehnder type modulator without deteriorating an extinction ratio even when an environmental temperature changes. SOLUTION: The Mach-Zehnder type modulator includes a substrate 1 having electrooptical effect, a Mach-Zehnder type light guide 2 having two interference arm light guides 23 and 23' formed on the substrate, and temperature control bodies 14, 14, 16 and 16' making temperatures of the two interference arm light guides 23 and 23' constant. Since the temperatures of the two interference arm light guides or temperature variation are made constant with the temperature control bodies even when the environmental temperature changes, operation points are varied not to deteriorate the extinction ratio.
