PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a method for producing a polyester having excellent properties for hollow containers free from polyester coloration and foreign matter formation, which method is one for producing a polyester excellent in ultraviolet shielding properties from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol as the principal raw materials by direct esterification, wherein a naphthalenedicarboxylic acid diester is used. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyester is one for producing the polyester from a dicarboxylic acid component containing dicarboxylic acids based on terephthalic acid and a diol component based on ethylene glycol through an esterification reaction step and a melt polycondensation step, wherein 0.002 to 2 mol%, based on the dicarboxylic acids in the dicarboxylic acid component, naphthalenedicarboxylic acid diester is used.
