PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To create acicular low crystallinity silica morphologically different from flaky silica by hydrothermal reaction without going through wollastonite and aluminosilicate. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution or aqueous slurry comprising alkaline lithium source and silica source is used as a starting material, and is subjected to hydrothermal treatment, thus low crystallinity acicular silica can be obtained. Particularly, as the alkaline lithium source, lithium hydroxide or the like is used, and, as the silica source, a silica sol or the like is used, or, as the alkaline lithium source and silica source, lithium silicate is used, thus the acicular silica having a diameter of 0.001 to 1μm and an aspect ratio of 5 to 200 can be provided.
