PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To slow down self ignition combustion and reduce combustion noise by lowering temperature of air-fuel mixture by injected liquid. SOLUTION: This control device is applied to an internal combustion engine 10 forming homogeneous air-fuel mixture containing air and fuel in a combustion chamber 24 constructed by a cylinder 21 and a piston 22 and performing pre-mixed compression self ignition operation in which the air-fuel mixture ignites by itself by compression during a compression stroke and burns. A control device is provided with a liquid injection valve 37 directly injecting liquid in the combustion chamber in response to drive signal, and generates drive signal at predetermined timing to make liquid injected from the liquid injection valve just evaporate when the quantity of heat generated by combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber is increasing.
