A machine for impregnating cartons or like articles with wax or the like, comprises a carrier rotating upon a vertical axis and fitted with a plurality of dipping-devices to which the cartons are fed successively, each article being dipped into a tank containing wax, withdrawn and inverted for draining, and then stripped from the dipping-device. Such a machine is shown in the drawings, and comprises a rotatable carrier 2 for the dipping-devices, a carton feeding mechanism 3, and a rotary table 4 to which the cartons are delivered after dipping. A belt conveyer 5 brings the cartons to the feed mechanism, and a second conveyer 6 receives them from the table 4. Carton-feeding mechanism.--The carton-feeding mechanism comprises a wheel 56 having arms 61 provided with fingers 62 which can pass through open slots 63 in a tubular guide 64, and a cam-operated striker arm 76 and plate 78 which push the foremost carton x, laterally of the belt 5, so that it is lifted by a finger 62. An electromagnetic control device may be provided to ensure that the cartons are struck singly by the plate 78. On reaching the slotted cradle 100, the carton is pushed into a holder 42 by means of a cam-operated lever 98. Another cam then raises the lever 98 so that its return movement takes place over the top of the cradle 100. Dipping-mechanism.--The rotatable carrier 2, 14 is provided with radially-disposed dipping-devices, each comprising a tubular pivoted arm 16 provided with a crank arm 18 actuated by a cam-operated slider bar 20. A second cam-operated slider bar 30 actuates a push rod 36 connected to the bell-crank lever 40, 41 carrying a basket-like carton holder 42. A part-annular waxing tank 47 is mounted concentrically with the pillar 8, on coupled screw jacks 48, 49, for vertical adjustment, and the circle around the carrier top 14 is completed by two part-circular draining trays 52, 53, which may be heated. As the carrier 2, which may be driven intermittently, is rotated, each carton is first lowered into the waxing tank 47, is then raised so that it passes over the draining trays in vertical and inverted position, and is finally lowered into an approximately horizontal position to be removed from its holder 42. This removal is effected by a lever 107 operated by a cam 106 on the main shaft 7, the ejected carton falling through a shoot 111 and arriving upon a rotating heated perforated table 4, by which it is led to a conveyer belt 6, and thence to a cooling chamber, storage room or filling machine.
