A device for applying adhesive to a substrate (2) has a write head (4) with a write nozzle (5) and a camera (11), in which a position of the write head (4) indicated as Z-height is controlled by a position measurement and control circuit (6). A laser (14) provides a laser beam (16), included in a given angle with the horizontal and by a calibration device with a deflectable surface, in which in a calibration surface the position of the laser beam impact point on the deflectable surface relative to the optical axis (12) and camera (11) and the z-height of the write head (4) can be determined, in which the write nozzle (5) of the write head touches the deflectable surface. An independent claim is included for a method of applying adhesive to a substrate.
