摘要 A free piston engine 10 is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders 14, 16 located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly 12. The engine 10 has an inner piston assembly 200 including a pair of inner pistons (202, 220, figs. 5A, 5B) and an outer piston assembly 250 including a pair of outer pistons 252, 275. Each outer piston 252, 275 cooperates with an integrated scavenge pump 74, 174 in order to compress the charge air, thus significantly increasing the air charge density into the engine cylinders 14, 16 for each stroke of the engine 10. Mounted on the rear of each outer piston 252, 275 is a piston bridge 264, 282 each having an oval outer surface 266, 283 that cooperates with the respective pumping chamber (78, 178, figs.5A,5B) of the scavenge pumps 74, 174. The piston bridges 264, 282 are interconnected by pull rods 293, 294. The engine may operate on a two-cycle mode with HCCI (homogeneous charge, compression ignition).
