The device includes a first work area (3) for receiving the intermediate layer (7) and a second work area (4) for setting down an intermediate layer. The intermediate layer is raised in the first work area by the lift device (2) into a centring device, centred by same and then transferred by a holding device where the side flaps can be folded by the folding device in order then to be transferred again by the lift mechanism once centred and/or folded. The intermediate layer is then moved into the second work area and lowered by the lift device onto the packing boxes (12) which have been stacked there by the palletting machine (25). Independent claim describes method for introducing intermediate layers by picking up and centring a non-centred layer, folding the side flaps and in a second position lowering it centred onto the palletted packing boxes.
