The vehicle is equipped with a system regulating the speed according to the distance between the vehicle and a second vehicle in front controlled by an appropriate sensor unit. A second function comprises the automatic adjustment of the speed of the vehicle to a pre-selected maximum. The new method combines both of the systems in order to facilitate an adjustment of speed to the density of the traffic as well as to a pre-selected limit.
