The method involves alternately using a connecting cable of a user`s station for telecommunication in the range of traditionally-chosen communication services (plain old telephone service (POTS)) or for the digital subscriber line (DSL) transmission. Direct change-over into the DSL mode takes place and connects the cable with DSL modem output only if analysis and control unit (6) finds that the cable is not busy by the POTS application. The analysis and control unit examines the busy condition of the cable. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for the DSL transmission.
