There is provided a polypeptide having the following physical and chemical properties: (1) potency: stereoselectively reducing 1-chloro-3-hydroxyacetone with the use of NADH as a coenzyme to thereby produce (S)-3-chloro-1,2-propanediol; (2) molecular weight: about 340,000 as measured by gel filtration analysis and about 43,000 as measured by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis; (3) optimum temperature: 60˚ to 70˚C; (4) reduction optimum pH: 6.0, and (5) oxidation optimum pH: 9.0. Further, there are provided a polypeptide composed of an amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 of the sequence listing; a DNA coding for the polypeptide; and a transformant capable of producing the polypeptide in high rate. Still further, there is provided a process for producing (S)-3-chloro-1,2-propanediol useful as a starting material of medicine, etc. in which use is made of the above polypeptide or transformant. |
