The wheels of at least one axle are driven continuously. The propulsion unit has at least two hydraulic pumps, and a control unit for the processing of different steering and/or driving torques. The control unit via the hydraulic pumps feeds to the wheel motors a controllable flow volume of hydraulic fluid. An independent claim is included for a starting safety circuit for the propulsion units of motor vehicles to check the functioning state of the components influencing the starting process when the starting process is initiated.
