A structural body, a chip using the structural body, and a method of controlling lyophilic/lyophobic properties. The method comprises a step for precisely controlling the lyophilic and lyophobic properties of a material surface by a simple structure, a step for providing an anisotropy to the intensity of the lyophilic property or lyophobic property on the material surface where the lyophilic/lyophobic properties are controlled by using the step for precise control, and a step for holding a liquid in a specified area on the material surface by applying these steps. For example, a liquid holding part (103) formed of an irregular recessed and projected structure and an outer peripheral part (104) formed of a flat surface surrounding the outer periphery of the liquid holding part (103) are formed on the surface of a substrate (101). The surface area of the recessed and projected structure of the liquid holding part (103) is formed larger than the area of a liquid holding part (103) forming area, and the irregular recessed and projected structure is formed so that the multiplication factor of the surface area can be set to a specified value.
