The direct invertor (1) has three inputs (2-4) from a three-phase transformer (5), and six outputs (6-11) each connected to one input via a branch contg. two inverse-parallel thyristors (12). Each winding (e.g. 13) of the stator of the synchronous motor is supplied from two outputs (e.g. 6,7). The rotor (18) is DC-excited from a full-pole system in which each excitation winding extends over at least about two-thirds of the pole spacing in grooves arranged to distribute the flux so that harmonics of lower order are suppressed.
