An SED includes a front panel (10) and a rear panel (12) arranged to form a sealed space via a side wall (14) of rectangular frame shape. On the inner surface of the front panel (10), there is formed an image display unit (20) having a fluorescent layer. On the inner surface of the rear panel (12), there are formed a plenty of electron discharge elements and their drive wires (19a, 19b). A power supply wire (21) of annular shape for supplying high voltage to the image display unit (20) via a metal back is formed on the outer surface of the image display unit (20) of the front panel (10). At a portion of the rear panel (12) opposing to the power supply wire (21), there is arranged a bypass member (30) functioning as a lightning conductor in a state electrically independent from a lower wire (19a).
