A method of operating a large piston engine that has at least two selectable modes of operation (A, B) each including operating parameters and operating conditions optimised for achieving a particular performance over a range of engine speeds (n). each mode of operation results in engine speed dependent vibratory stress level (tau) in an engine component or in a component of an installation excited by the engine. The engine is operated in a selected one of the modes of operation, and at each engine speed, a vibratory stress level in the engine component or in the component of the installation excited by the engine is determined and compared to a predetermined vibratory stress level limit. If the predetermined vibratory stress limit is exceeded, one or more operating parameters of the selected mode of operation are modified, or another mode of operation is selected to reduce the vibratory stress level. |
